Why choose COMO Shambhala Estate?
This is a retreat for travellers who want wellness to shape the stay rather than occupy a spare hour between sightseeing and dinner. The estate combines practitioner consultations, movement, treatments, nutrition and time in nature, but it does not require every guest to follow an intensive programme. Individual treatments and activities can also be booked for a lighter approach.
The setting is integral. Forest, river valley and spring water create a sense of separation from ordinary resort life, while the breadth of the wellness centre means guests can move between traditional bodywork, exercise, thermal bathing and newer technology without leaving the estate.
Wellness Paths
COMO currently offers several personalised Wellness Paths. These include Integrated Wellness, Fit to Perform, Detox to Restore, Nourish to Glow, Connect to Rebalance and Ayurveda. The programmes begin with consultation and are tailored around the guest’s goals rather than delivered as an identical timetable to everyone.
Most guests undertaking a Path stay for several nights, with COMO currently presenting common retreat lengths around five, seven or ten nights while some individual Paths can be structured from shorter starting points. Before booking, ask for a sample itinerary and clarify exactly which consultations, private sessions, treatments, meals and diagnostics are included.
Shorter Wellness Programmes
For travellers who do not want a full residential retreat, COMO has also introduced two-day Wellness Programmes. Current themes include nervous-system rebalancing, energy, tech-inspired wellness, metabolic reset, mindfulness, posture alignment and a wellness weekend.
These shorter programmes can be added to a hotel stay and some can be booked without accommodation. That flexibility makes the Estate more accessible to guests who want expert-led structure without committing an entire holiday to a wellness Path.
Ojas wellness centre
Ojas sits close to the meeting point of the Ayung and Tibakauh rivers and forms the centre of the Estate’s wellness operation. Current official information confirms nine indoor treatment rooms, three outdoor pavilions and private consultation rooms for resident practitioners.
The treatment approach spans hands-on restorative therapies and Asian healing traditions alongside contemporary wellness technology. The Spa Traveller distinguishes clearly between spa and clinical medicine: specialist therapies may require screening and should not be treated as substitutes for diagnosis or medical care.
Sauna, steam and cold plunge
The sauna and steam room are complimentary for resident guests, while a separate cold-plunge room uses a Brass Monkey ice bath maintained at approximately 8–10°C. The contrast-therapy room is more intensive, combining a Sunlighten infrared sauna with an ice bath maintained around 0–4°C and is available only as a guided session.
Extreme cold is not appropriate for everyone. Guests with cardiovascular, circulatory or other relevant conditions should seek suitable advice before cold immersion. There is no prize for staying in very cold water for longer than is comfortable; supervised use and gradual exposure are more sensible than social-media-style endurance challenges.
Outdoor vitality pool
The outdoor vitality pool has 11 water jets targeting different areas of the body and is used for guided hydrotherapy circuits and joint-mobilising massage. It is a treatment-oriented pool rather than simply somewhere to float between appointments.
The wider Estate also includes a 25-metre swimming pool and natural spring-water pools, giving active guests proper swimming and nature-based water experiences beyond the treatment centre.
Pilates, yoga and fitness
The private Pilates studio is unusually well equipped, with Balanced Body Reformers, Cadillacs, a Ladder Barrel and Stability Chairs. Private sessions can therefore go well beyond a basic mat class. An open-air yoga pavilion hosts daily activities, while the fitness centre has weights and cardio equipment overlooking the Estate.
For guests choosing Fit to Perform or posture-focused programmes, this movement infrastructure is a major strength. It allows assessment, mobility, strength, Pilates and recovery to be combined rather than treating exercise as an isolated hotel-gym session.
Health technology
COMO’s current wellness centre includes hyperbaric oxygen equipment and colonic hydrotherapy alongside body-composition analysis and other technology used within selected programmes. These are specialist services, not casual spa facilities, and may involve screening, guidance and additional charges.
The Spa Traveller recommends approaching health-tech claims with the same care you would apply elsewhere: understand what is being measured or delivered, ask about practitioner qualifications and contraindications, and separate general wellbeing goals from treatment of diagnosed medical conditions.
Treatments and practitioners
The Estate combines massage and bodywork with traditions including Ayurveda, acupuncture and other Asian therapies. Resident specialists can include Ayurvedic doctors, nutrition professionals, physiotherapists, massage therapists and yoga teachers, depending on the programme and dates.
If a particular practitioner or modality is the main reason for travelling, confirm availability before paying for flights. Visiting specialists and programme schedules can change, and the quality of a personalised retreat depends heavily on matching the itinerary to the right expertise.
Food and nutrition
COMO Shambhala Cuisine is central to the wellness philosophy rather than an optional diet menu hidden beside standard resort food. The Estate’s dining includes glow, which focuses on health-conscious cuisine, alongside Kudus House for Indonesian dishes.
Guests on structured programmes may receive more personalised nutritional guidance. Clarify dietary requirements, allergies and any clinically prescribed diet before travel. A wellness retreat should complement appropriate healthcare, not encourage guests to abandon necessary medical nutrition advice.
Nature and cultural experiences
The Estate’s location supports guided walks, spring-water experiences, cycling, temple visits, cooking and other Bali activities. Kedara Water Garden by the Ayung River is one of the signature natural spaces, with mineral pools set within the valley landscape.
These experiences matter because a retreat can become counterproductive if every hour is scheduled with treatments and assessments. Leaving time for walking, reading and unstructured nature can be as valuable to the overall stay as adding another appointment.
Who will enjoy it most?
- Longer-stay wellness travellers: the Estate has enough depth for multi-day personalised programmes.
- Fitness and movement guests: Pilates, yoga, strength, hydrotherapy and recovery can be integrated.
- Stressed professionals: structured programmes can combine mindfulness, nature and practical lifestyle work.
- Wellness-technology enthusiasts: guided contrast therapy, body composition and specialist technology add a contemporary layer.
- Guests who want flexibility: shorter programmes and à-la-carte treatments allow a less intensive stay.
How long should you stay?
A standard leisure stay can be short, but a personalised wellness programme benefits from time. COMO’s own guidance commonly recommends several nights for Wellness Paths, while its two-day programmes provide a shorter introduction. The right duration depends on whether you want a spa-focused holiday, a structured reset or a more intensive fitness or nutrition programme.
Do not automatically choose the longest itinerary. Ask what changes between three, five, seven or ten nights and whether the additional days add meaningful practitioner contact or simply more free time.
Practical planning
COMO currently places the Estate around 15–20 minutes from Ubud town and approximately 90 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport, depending on traffic. The natural landscape includes slopes and steps, so guests with mobility requirements should discuss room location, transfers and routes around the Estate before arrival.
Reserve specialist treatments and consultations early, disclose relevant health conditions and confirm which facilities are complimentary versus charged. Some health-tech and guided hydrotherapy experiences require advance booking.
The Spa Traveller view
COMO Shambhala Estate remains compelling because it can operate at several levels. It is beautiful enough for a restorative Bali spa stay, structured enough for a serious multi-day wellness programme and technically equipped enough for guests interested in contemporary diagnostics and recovery. Its greatest strength is not any single machine or treatment but the ability to combine expert guidance, movement, food, water, bodywork and nature into one coherent stay.
